About TCforBE

Research Activities

The project is co-generating transformative change pathways to tackle the agricultural commodity trade driving biodiversity losses, through transdisciplinary research across consumer and producer countries.

Consumer Country Research

In the EU, we are investigating the systemic levers — from governance to finance — that can redirect agricultural trade toward biodiversity-positive outcomes.

  • Modelling shifts toward agroecology in agriculture
  • Investigating governance innovations as leverage points for systemic change
  • Exploring legal options such as Rights of Nature for multi-species justice
  • Assessing consumer innovations to influence biodiversity-friendly consumption
  • Analysing social movements and collective action in transforming food systems
  • Developing practical models to mobilise biodiversity finance

Producer Country Research

Kenya Cameroon Colombia

In selected producer countries, we are examining how national policy frameworks address biodiversity and land use change.

  • Analysing national development, agriculture, and biodiversity policies
  • Evaluating how these policies address diverse nature values
  • Assessing the impacts of recent policies on biodiversity and land use change

Landscape-Based Research

Cameroon Colombia Kenya

In one commodity frontier landscape per country, we work closely with local communities using participatory and arts-based methods to understand and reimagine their environments.

  • Exploring rural imaginaries — how people understand themselves, their environment, and place
  • Exploring visions for future landscapes and biodiversity
  • Co-creating storylines, scenarios, and Bayesian models to inform change

Landscape Learning Alliance

Each study site has established a Landscape Learning Alliance — a collaborative forum where local actors work together to shape decision-making at local and national levels.

  • Framing challenges and identifying learning priorities
  • Sharing knowledge and perspectives — including non-human considerations
  • Influencing decision-making at both local and national levels
