The project is co-generating transformative change pathways to tackle the agricultural commodity trade driving biodiversity losses, through transdisciplinary research across consumer and producer countries.
Consumer Country Research
In the EU, we are:
-
✓Modelling shifts toward agroecology in agriculture.
-
✓Investigating governance innovations as key leverage points for systemic change.
-
✓Exploring legal options, such as Rights of Nature, to promote multi-species justice.
-
✓Assessing consumer innovations to influence biodiversity-friendly consumption.
-
✓Analysing the role of social movements and collective action in transforming food systems.
We are also addressing the challenges of biodiversity finance and developing practical models to mobilise resources and action.
Producer Country Research
In selected producer countries (Kenya, Cameroon, Colombia) we are:
-
✓Analysing national development, agriculture, and biodiversity policies.
-
✓Evaluate how these policies address diverse nature values.
-
✓Assess the impacts of recent policies on biodiversity and land use change.
Landscape-Based Research
In one commodity frontier landscape each in Cameroon, Colombia and Kenya, respectively, we work closely with local communities using participatory and arts-based methods to:
-
✓Explore rural imaginaries – how people understand themselves, their environment, and place.
-
✓Explore visions for future landscapes and biodiversity.
-
✓Co-create storylines, scenarios, and Bayesian models to inform change.
Landscape Learning Alliance
Each site has established a Landscape Learning Alliance, where local actors collaborate to:
-
✓Frame challenges and identify learning priorities.
-
✓Share knowledge and perspectives—including non-human considerations.
-
✓Influence decision-making at both local and national levels.
